Water soluble excipients q.s. to  100 gm
Manufacturing and packaging are carried out according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

Action

  • Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic of the polymyxin group produced by cultures of Bacillus polymyxa var. colistinus.
  • Colimicin exerts a high bactericidal activity on both multiplying and resting susceptible bacteria.
  • Colimicin interacts strongly with phospholipids in bacterial cell membrane, penetrates into and radically disrupts its permeability and function.
  • Colimicin has a protective effect against the adverse effects of endotoxins as Colimicin has a high activity to bind and neutralize the endotoxins produced by toxigenic strains of E.coli and Salmonella spp.

Properties

  • Colimicin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, by the oral route of administration is very safe, well tolerated and no systemic or local adverse effects.
  • Under normal conditions, less than 0.5% of an administered oral dose is absorbed from  G.I.T. Therefore the
antibacterial activity of Colimicin against susceptible bacteria remains located in the enteric tract. The drug is rapidly exerted via faeces.
  • Colimicin is characterized by rapid and complete solubility and high stability of the solution.
  • It is worth noticing that Colimicin solutions are stable at acid PH, thus not loosing the potency during the passage into the stomach and being able to be fully effective at the enteric level.
  • In multi-organisms infections, Colimicin can be combined with other antibiotics mainly to obtain a systemic activity and /or to broaden the spectrum of activity, no interaction with other medicaments but combination with other polymyxins is useless.
  • A peculiarity of Colimicin is the lack of resistance by sensitive bacteria due to its specific mode of action.

Indications

  • Colimicin is indicated for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by or associated with bacteria sensitive to colistin in chickens (including laying hens), rabbits, and calves.
  • Colimicin is highly effective against gram negative bacteria, which includes: Aerobacter, E.coli, Hemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pasteurella spp., Pseudomonas, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Bordetella spp., Vibrio spp. and Paracolon bacteria.

Uses

  • Colimicin is used for treatment of all digestive diseases caused by enteric gram negative pathogenic and toxigenic bacteria.
In chickens: colibacillosis, colisepticaemia, colienteritis, enterotoxicosis, salmonellosis, pullorosis, infectious coryza, klebseillosis, bortdetellosis, avian vibrionic hepatitis and pseudomonas infection.
In calves: colienteritis, colisepticaemia, calf scour and secondary bacterial diarrhea after viral infections.
